We had a chance to have a little chat with Matt and here’s how it went-

1. Can you discuss the impact of live performances on your connection with the audience and your music?

Performing live has always been one of my favorite aspects of being a professional musician. Engaging with my audience has led to many great opportunities for collaboration and being featured in different venues. My music has touched people in ways I did not think were possible. My goal as a singer-songwriter and performer is to inspire as many people as I can, and performing live has been a blessing in helping me do so.

2. How do you engage with your fans, both online and offline?

I engage with many of my fans online, whether it be through Instagram or Facebook. I am always updating my status as a performing and recording musician, so my fans online are able to easily see these updates. Offline, I love engaging with fans in person, especially in between live performances. I feel that this aspect of engagement has been drastically reduced with the addition of accessible technology. My goal is to connect and engage with my fans in any way possible, whether it be online or in person during or after performing.

3. What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry, and how do you navigate its changes?

The music industry has significantly changed from what it was just several years ago, and is constantly evolving. I feel that while there are benefits to this, there are also immense challenges us as professional musicians and singer-songwriters face in the current state of the industry. With the exponential increase in advanced technology, the human element of music is becoming lost in some ways. As a musician who grew up classically trained and always learned to play instruments and sing raw without any assistance from technology, it has been quite the learning experience. I am continuing to evolve with the industry, but still choose to follow the beat of my own drum. I will not entirely change who I am as a musician and songwriter to fit the theme of the music industry today.

4. Can you share a challenging moment in your career and how you overcame it?

One challenging moment in particular in my career thus far was when I was enduring extreme bouts and anxiety and OCD during the latter years of high school. I have a severe anxiety and OCD disorder that has impacted me all my life, but there was a period where I suffered greatly and did not know if I was going to come out on the other side. During this time, I was just beginning to record in the studio and perform live. I felt that while my career was taking off, both my mental and physical health were holding me back. Through several hospitalizations and an increase in medicine, I was able to recover from this severe period of my disorder. Through this experience, I relied even more on my songwriting and used that as my medicine, as well, and my whole life I have felt that my release comes when I am performing on stage.

5. How do you choose the cover art or visual elements for your music releases?

The cover art and visual elements for my music releases are typically a collaborative effort from my team of producers, but I often present a photo idea to begin with. For example, for my last release, “All Good Things,” the cover art I chose was from a picture I took on the Ben Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia as the sun was setting. I thought this would be a fitting cover art for the song, because the gift of a “day” was coming to an end, so the photo was edited and made into what you see today.
