Based in Los Angeles, United States, Parked Outside is an exciting new collective that’s formed from the creative geniuses of vocalist Chris Kinkade and the guitarist and bassist Slayden Clarkson. What started as a passion project, little did the band members of the band ‘Six Days Off’ know that their paths would again cross to bring the best of their musical influences into the collective Parked Outside. Their sound is catered to be eclectic, raw yet revolutionary in the best way possible!

Parked Outside

Taking you into a dark unravelling of the paranoia in one’s subconscious mind, ‘Whispers of 1000 Dreams Ago’ is subtle, smooth, yet would make you disassociate from all your troubles. Exploring the dystopian depths of everyday life, this track is smooth and profound, yet when you listen, you’ll feel like every line speaks to you. If a listener closes their eyes, the distilled electric guitar strumming would almost hypnotise them, sending them into a dreamlike state. Daunting, subtle yet surreal in the best way possible. I feel like this track’s the side of dark rock everyone needs to be on.

  1. How is the Chris and Slayden duo similar to Parked Outside as a collective?
Ans- Well, essentially, we are the ones pushing “Parked Outside” as a project. It is our collective vision and it is what we are concentrating on right now. Brett, our guitar slinger is getting more and more involved as I guess he sees what Slayden and I are doing as infectious so he is keen to get more involved as well which is cool, the more the merrier!
  2. What was the creative process behind this particular release?
Ans- The way we work is that Slayden comes up with the musical composition. He has lots of ideas and keeps pumping them out. He oversees the addition of Mike on drums and then Brett lays down his lead guitar. Once that is done I take it for a spin and add my words and voice. For this one I used an event in my life where a door to the subconscious was opened after a nasty car accident left me in a ditch in Texas sideways after some drunk in a truck headed for me head on as I was driving down a country road on a late Saturday night. I chose the ditch instead of eating his front bumper and wound up in an NDE scenario and the world has never been the same for me since. This song for me is about the index of possibilities that manifest when you realize there are more dimensions to this reality than we often are unaware of. After the song is completed I go about creating a music video to portray the essence of the song. “Whispers of 1000 Dreams Ago” was a really fun one to create and has gotten a great response and I hope it helps to make the song more relatable.
  3. We listened to the electric guitar solos on this one and fell in love! What are some artists you guys feel like have shaped your sound?
Ans- Yeah Brett Busch has no idea how damn great he is! He’s a humble guy who has so much musical magic in his soul that it is hard not to be blown away by what he delivers on ALL of our songs. I am not sure who his influences are but I hear some Jimi Hendrix in his riffs, some Robbie Krueger even some David Gilmour at times. For the overall sound I can only speak for myself in saying that I am influenced by Joy Division. I think they were hugely influential in a way that is only now being truly appreciated. I also like The Doors and am a huge fan of Jeff Buckley so I think my lyrical flourishes are in part formed by those guys because I take my job as our lyricist very seriously.
  4. What were the lyrical inspirations for this song? How do the verses on this one relate to your personal experiences as a collective?
Ans- Like I mentioned in an earlier question this was inspired by an actual event in my life, a car accident when I was younger that shifted my awareness of dimensional reality in a profound way. I have not heard too many songs that address this, the concept of an NDE or “near death experience” and I wanted to put that experience into words. In this song I kind of stake out the concept in a semi-confessional step by step instructional way without trying to be too didactic.
  5. Where do you guys draw inspiration from the most in your sound – experiences, people or places?
Ans- I would have to say experiences because that is such a broad palette to draw from and it also encompasses people and places. An artist’s true reference is usually experience. How it shapes you, informs you and inspires you.
  6. How do you guys overcome creative blocks while producing music?
Ans- We all have lives that are busy. Slayden is a top architect, in Houston Brett has his thing, Mike as well. I have been a top massage therapist in Hollywood for many years. I now live on a horse ranch out in the country so there is not much to block my creativity, in fact my mind is always bursting with new ideas and I wish I had more time to just devote to creating things but horses require a lot of attention so I try to indulge my creative muse in between feeding them, brushing them, exercising them and cleaning up after them, (it never ends!) We kind of effortlessly feed off of one another. Each guy knows what they bring to the table and mutual respect is the essence
    of our cohesion.
