Naked Face is a young Electro-Pop Duo from Australia. Steve Slik is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who leads the band with Luke House on bass guitar. They combine Energy, Mood, ambience, and Feeling in their work. All three of their previous singles reached #1 on Triple J Unearthed. With their passion for EDM, their current dance-pop single ‘Eyes in Love’ was released on March 31st, 2023, and is distributed by Sony Music Entertainment’s AWAL.

I recently came across this song titled, ‘Eyes In Love’ by Naked Face. The song is an electro-pop, high-on-energy dance track that touches on the elements of heartbreak, betrayal and addiction. The music is personal to Steve Slik, and he wrote the song about his struggles with a deteriorating, tumultuous relationship while battling a severe post-surgical opioid addiction. We had a chance to have a little chat with Naked Face and this is how it went-
1. What inspired you to start creating your own music?
Answer – Our creative journey began with a deep admiration for the artistry of our favourite musicians. As we listened to their work, we were struck by how emotion was conveyed through songwriting, melodies, and lyrics. This powerful storytelling ultimately inspired us to start creating our own music, hoping to convey our own personal experiences and perspectives through our songs.
Over the years, we have devoted countless hours to mastering our instruments, honing our craft, and refining our musical/ songwriting abilities. We have taken inspiration from a wide range of genres, artists, and styles, allowing us to develop a unique sound.
2. The track sounds great! Is there any event you’d like to share with us during its creation?
Answer- Thank you! It was inspired by a deeply personal experience of our lead singer, Steve Silks, who suffered from oxycodone addiction, overdose, and heartbreak as a result of a medical error that occurred after a tonsillectomy.
Due to a mistake made by the hospital, Steve was overprescribed high doses of oxycodone without proper monitoring of the dosage he was receiving. Consequently, he developed a dangerous addiction to the medication that was never properly addressed, leaving him with severe withdrawal symptoms and a host of related conditions, including medical trauma, PTSD, acute anxiety disorder, and chronic insomnia.
The experience was a painful and difficult one for Steve, but it ultimately became the source of inspiration for our latest track. The song speaks to the devastating impact of addiction on individuals and their loved ones and the importance of proper medical oversight in managing prescription medication.
3. What is the message that you’d like to send out to our readers and your listeners?
Answer- Through the music, melodies, lyrics and writing of Eyes in Love, we hope to raise awareness about the dangers of overprescribing opioids and the urgent need for medical professionals to take greater care in monitoring the use of these drugs. We also hope that our song will resonate with those who have experienced addiction or been affected by it in some way and that it will serve as a source of comfort and inspiration for anyone who is struggling with similar issues. Eyes in Love also delves into the complex themes of heartbreak and betrayal. It is an inevitable truth that love, much like a drug, can lead us to experience profound pain and suffering. The intensity of our emotional investment in a relationship can create a vulnerability that exposes us to the possibility of being hurt.
4. How did your musical journey begin and who supported you the most through this journey?
Answer- Our lead vocalist and pianist, Steve, began his musical journey at the young age of 5 with classical piano training, followed by guitar training at age 6. He has been professionally singing for years and songwriting since he was 8 years old. This extensive musical background has helped shape our band’s unique sound and style.
Luke, our bass and guitar player, has over 15 years of experience playing both instruments and has been an integral part of our band since joining in 2020. He began playing the guitar at the young age of 7, and bass at age 14.
When we first started as a band in 2019, we had a full lineup with multiple members. However, we cycled through many changes to our lineup, which made it challenging to find the right combination of members. Ultimately, after facing challenges with negativity, betrayal and toxicity from one of our former members, Steve and Luke decided to break away and become a two-piece. It was a difficult decision to make, but necessary for us to move forward and create the music we truly believe in.
Despite these challenges, we have been fortunate to receive unwavering support from Steve’s family and close friends throughout our journey. Their support and encouragement have been invaluable to us and we are grateful for it.
Overall, we are thrilled to continue pursuing our passion for music and are excited about what the future holds for our band.
5. As a musician, what are the challenges that you face and how do you deal with them?
Answer- As a band, we are grateful to have the opportunity to pursue music as a career and wake up every day to do what we love. However, our journey has not been without challenges. One of the biggest obstacles we faced was managing the many lineup changes, which was a difficult process and took a toll on the band’s morale.
In particular, we felt deeply hurt by the actions of a former band member long in our past, who displayed negative, misleading, and disrespectful behaviour, which resulted in harm to both the group and our relationships. Unfortunately, this person did not share our positivity, collaboration, and respect values. Their toxic conduct, including derogatory remarks about one of our members, caused irreparable damage.
Subsequent to their departure, we received abusive messages from some of their acquaintances, one of them who went to the extent of creating a fake social media profile to message us, posing as an anonymous hater. We want to emphasize that we are sharing our experience not to defame anyone but to be truthful about what occurred.
We understand that losing a band member can be challenging, but we remain optimistic and wish the departing member all the best in their future pursuits. We are focusing on the valuable lessons learned and continuing to create music that we enjoy, despite the obstacles we encountered. We are grateful for the opportunities that lie ahead of us.
