Washington, DC-based R&B artist, songwriter, and producer R. Nelson recently released ‘Cup Of Tea’, a six-track EP built around alternate interpretations, a female response, and ‘I Didn’t Change, I Expanded’ with Geese Da Goon. His music blends R&B, soul, and pop with reflective songwriting about relationships, vulnerability, growth, and accountability. He works independently through Ashy Knuckle Productions, combining traditional songwriting and layered production.

A warm cup of tea with steam rising, placed on a wooden table beside a small keyboard and music equipment, with the title 'Cup of Tea EP' and the name 'R. Nelson' overlaying the image.

“Soulful R&B that sits with the feeling instead of rushing past it.”

I like the idea behind ‘Cup Of Tea’, where R. Nelson takes one story and turns it into a conversation, allowing different interpretations to bring new shades to the feeling. The EP spends time with the quieter side of relationships: the thoughts we keep to ourselves, the things we understand later, and the space between confidence and doubt. That makes the project feel personal without becoming heavy. Musically, there is a smooth meeting point between classic soul influence and contemporary R&B. The production creates a late-night atmosphere, but the songwriting remains the centre of attention. ‘I Didn’t Change, I Expanded’ with Geese Da Goon brings another voice into the project while connecting with its themes of growth and personal evolution. I enjoy the breathing room in R. Nelson’s approach. There is no need to overcrowd the songs when the emotion can sit quietly and speak for itself. ‘Cup Of Tea’ is smooth, intimate, and easy to settle into while leaving enough detail to make another listen worthwhile.
