Powers of the Monk, a band originating from the wide musical landscape of Pontiac-Detroit-Ann Arbor, Michigan area of the USA, is best known for their retro guitar rock, which dips into indie pop. The duo, composed of David S. Monk handling the vocals, guitar, and keyboard along with CasSondra Powers, who handles the vocals and violin, made their initial debut in 2022 with their demo “Firefly”, their ability to depict dreamlike stories through their melodies captured the attention of the renowned Italian producer Dani Macchi, a founding member of Italian band, Belladonna. This fateful encounter led to the release of a re-recorded version of their original “Firefly” in late 2023, setting the stage for the world to witness their raw talent.

”Witness the echo of reality, shaped by those with fractured minds”

Joined by guest drummer John O’Reilly Jr, “Bread & Circuses” is their latest instalment in their pursuit of achieving the pinnacle of music. Through this track, they explore the surreal, ever-changing inner world of a schizophrenia patient. The track really does a great job recreating that dreamlike feeling through clean and expressive playing of the guitars, whispered vocals, and immaculate atmospheric production. The track starts mellow, blending the quirky characteristics of its protagonist with dreamy instrumentals, eventually weaving a hospital landscape. The song shows the chaos and beauty of a distorted point of view, conveying it with vivid imagery like raging fires, circus cages, lions, and clowns. POM’s signature aesthetic in music is evolving, expanding into this new mellow territory, and we are here to witness it.
