Cambridge, Ontario’s Suburban Bicycle Gang plays indie music. “In the Cosmos” is their first new music since 2019’s “Soft Balls Are Too Hard,” and it’s a great representation of the band’s signature sound. Suburban Bicycle Gang is swiftly rising to prominence in Canada as a must-see live act because of their high-energy shows.

“Wading in a pool of tingling brilliant lights is what it feels like to listen to Lake Scugog.”

‘Lake Scugog’ is one of ten songs that “blend humour with musical prowess” on their highly praised studio album In The Cosmos. Each song on In the Cosmos, the band says, “invites listeners into a world of off-the-wall creativity, where the unexpected becomes the norm.” After the opening title tune, ‘Lake Scugog’ follows with a wistful blend of folk-rock and psychedelic-rock. In this musical adventure, the forceful rhythm acts as our own pulse, pulsing through the tune. The dynamic guitars drift in a trance-like haze, yet despite the tranquilly and languor of the sonic forest, each instrument has a strong, foot-tapping presence. In this hazy background, the glint of the keys creates a sense of wonder. Really, while the soothing voice and catchy tune lull you to sleep, a hint of hidden intimacy sneaks in and makes you wonder, “Well, what am I feeling…and do I even care?”

Rather than being overwhelmed by any one piece, I found myself being swept up in the kaleidoscope soundscape created by the song altogether. Catch the muse down here:
