Red Telephone, a Cardiff-based band that was founded in 2018, makes richly layered alt-rock that sounds like it could have come straight out of a dystopian sci-fi. Sonically, the band draws inspiration from a wide specturm of influences; ranging from Berlin-era Bowie, brooding synth-led film soundtracks such as Blade Runner and Uncut Gems, the art rock of Kate Bush and St Vincent, as well as modern electronic pop artists such as MGMT, Mitski and Tame Impala.

Red telephone’s Hollowing out begs the question, “Are you alive or just breathing?”
Hollowing Out, the debut album from Cardiff-based five-piece Red Telephone released on 31st March 2023. The dystopia-tinged album deals with themes of alienation, identity and monotony.
The album has a nihilistic undertone. “Normal life” is my personal favourite, it’s so beautifully written with such mesmerising music, so simple yet so touching, it makes you realise how you’re just another rat in the race, unseen, unheard and unnoticed. “Wake me” is another riveting track that I am still trying to wrap my head around, I have got it on repeat. The lyrics “Where you are is where you die, Still you sucked your future dry” are so moving, so profound, and so relatable. “I’m broken” is another track which I feel we all will relate to, we all at some point have put up fake smiles, while still being hooked on to the past. Wandering aimlessly, seeking more from life, a ray of hope perhaps?
Honestly I can go on and on about this album but I think you should just put it on right away, cause no amount of praise will do justice to this brilliant album.
