What a pleasure it is to go back in time and listen to the OG music that made us all fall in love with vintage sounds. If you are missing that, let us take you on a journey with Ray’s Music Exchange as they release their full-length album ‘A Live Family Rayunion 2025’. Formed in Cincinnati in 1996, Ray’s Music Exchange has spent three decades bringing adventurous, improvisational music to life, and people still love them for their authenticity and experimentation. Born from the creative energy around the University of Cincinnati, the collective built a name for its lively performances, skilled musicianship and, of course, its signature free-flowing mix of jazz fusion and progressive funk. After years of touring and releasing independent albums, the band went on hiatus in 2006 before returning for a celebrated reunion in 2010. Their live gatherings have since become a way for the band and its longtime listeners to reconnect, celebrate old memories and make new ones.

“A joyful rush of music that makes you wish you were right there in the crowd.”
Now, the original band returns with ‘A Live Family Rayunion 2025’, recorded at Cincinnati’s historic Woodward Theatre, bringing together familiar faces and a new generation of local musicians. As soon as I put the collection on tape, I felt something special about it because I am a sucker for instrumental albums. I feel that, without words to guide the feeling, the music gets to tell its own story, and ‘A Live Family Rayunion 2025’ gives it plenty to say. From the opening moments, you are pulled into a world where melodies seem to find each other naturally, weaving into lively symphonies of sound. I guess that’s what the Rays are famous for. The guitars, keyboards, bass, and percussion keep the music moving, while the horns add another burst of excitement. Some moments feel like a playful conversation between instruments, with one melody stepping forward before another joins in. Then comes a perfect explosion of drums, guitars, and horns, filling the room with the kind of energy that’s hard to sit still through.

What I love about the album is how the live setting adds to the band’s magic. I mean, you can almost picture yourself moving with the crowd in a jam-packed concert and vibing to the rhythm. It feels less like listening to a collection of tracks and more like being invited into the family reunion (pun intended), where every instrument has a voice, every melody has room to wander, and the music keeps bringing everyone together. ‘A Live Family Rayunion 2025’ is a beautiful reminder that some musical connections never fade, and you must listen to it before it’s too late.
