Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Reetoxa is embodying the essence of classic rock and adding their own creative spin to that energy, with every banger they’ve been dropping lately. Aussie-rock band that is led by the creative genius of Jason McKee, the legend has reportedly spent 30 years perfecting his songwriting craft, and with the project, he’s finally joined forces with the production powerhouse Simon Moro, creating a sound that’s worth getting all your love. However, for this project, they have assembled an entire orchestra of talented musicians, creating nothing but absolute magic. Without further ado, let’s dive right into it!

Starting strong with the energetic intro to the brand title ‘REETOXA’, this is a reimagination of the band’s original brand, adding a flair of energy to their name. While the tracks ‘INSATIABLE’ and ‘BOTTLE’ feel like a rush of adrenaline, both of them carry varied meanings and undertones to them. While the first one describes the feeling of an endless yearning that exists in the minds of everyone we meet, the latter feels like an ode to our survival instincts. Then we get to a track that completely alters your brain chemistry. ‘AKAKORA’, which happens to be a perfect travel song and an adorable confession, its too adorable to be true.

However, ‘DANCING WITH YOU’ feels like a different wavelength altogether. Reviving the energy of dance groove in rock, this lowkey feels like a louder yell for love, and feels like a boost of confidence. ‘THIFT SHOP DRESS’ adds onto the feeling of admiring your loved one, all the little things about them that make you yearn for them. However, as the album progresses through ‘THE LISA SONG’, ‘TRUCE’ and ‘JOSEPHINE’, we fall harder in love with its heat. Emotionally soft tracks that revive surrealism in indie rock, these tracks feel like a rush of blood in your head. On one hand, while the lyrics are nothing but mere admiration of the loved one, the energy of the track gets loud, insatiable as the infatuation grows more and more, as we see in ‘JADE EYES’.

But with love we arrive at feelings of fake hope and paranoia, with tracks like ‘ERICA AND THE STARS’, ‘DEMAND PERFECTION’, ‘TIMOR LESTE’, and ‘STARE AT THE SEA’ that embody a sense of oversaturation of emotions as they peak through every moment we experience in our life, while noticing the smaller things in life and trying to demand meaning in them.

But rage returns with ‘SCHITZO WALTZ’, as the artist highlights the feeling when the fuzzy feelings finally fade and true colours finally show up. Through tracks like ‘PURPLE VEIN’, ‘YOU DESERVE BETTER THAN ME’, the battle of reality checks and holding onto that person lingers, as the illusion breaks. Feeling like a full-blown episode of paranoia, these are simply grunge intensified. ‘DRESS ME UP’, however, is a track that stands out for the happy vibes. It’s coy, playful and has got the passion of the 90s rock that we all love and adore.

‘WAR KILLER’, however, marks the end of the fairytale, as the drama finally unfolds. However, we sense rebound energy kicking in with ‘GIRLS ROCK’, a track that’s about being in the moment and not caring too much; this revives the funky tones the album is full of. Overall, I feel like the album is full of quite versatile highs and lows, and truly, embodies every single emotion can adult dealing with love, life and relationships can resonate with. The sound and production quality are insanely good on this one, and I highly summon my fellow rock heads to give this beauty a listen.
