Blessing the world with her charismatic aura from London, Susan Style is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter and producer whose artistry is nothing but a storytelling chronicle of a 9,000-mile journey she took from Taipei to London, and is full of avant-garde synth-pop mixed with dreamy elements of cinema. As someone who has full autonomy over the entire creative process of her music, from writing to production, she aims to bridge the gap between Eastern emotional depth and the Western experimentation with music, which not just owns brokenness but also synthesises the cross-cultural elements to it, and most importantly, celebrates it!

We hit it off with the mesmerising soundscapes of ‘The Hope From The Dream’. Giving off nu-pop energy, this hints at the extraordinary enthusiasm one feels with a dream. ‘The Song Sung by the Stars’, on the other hand, feels more tempered down and structured. Bringing in paranoia and escapism vibes into this, this is a daydreaming surprise disguised as what feels like a sad song. ‘All Things New’ is named exactly the way it sounds. Introducing a voila moment of fairy core into the album, this is sweet, summery and sounds full of nostalgia. As if the artist tries to remember the vivid memories, this Chinese song is a beautiful work of art. It’s inviting, soft and carries a very feminine aura to it.

Next, with ‘Only a Broken Heart Can Hold the World’, we arrive at the thunderous title track of our album. Full of gunshots, headlights and multiple dissociating sounds put together to harmonise in the most out of this world way, this is funky, futuristic and very dapper to listen to. The mood of the album changes completely with a cute lullaby intro we hear in ‘Weird in a Good Way’. A dynamic, ecstatic and energetic melody where almost every 30 seconds in the mood transpires into absolute magic, this has got elements of retro salsa and groovy synthesisers that give you a straight spike of adrenaline. ‘For You,’ on the contrary, is a slow narrative song that leans into the familiar femininity and solace we witnessed with the introductory songs. This feels like an adorable pause in the album.

Finally, with ‘A Fling’, we almost teleport into a romantic comedy. A perfect sonification of the butterflies in the tummy that one feels when they feel drawn to someone, this is too cute to be true. Soft, playful and coy, the lyrics on this one are simple yet very relatable, and the gamer core backdrops here are the cherry on top. Overall, I feel like this is a well-rounded and super wholesome album that has something for everyone and is the most beautiful EDM compilation I’ve heard in a while!
