Mike Stewart Theory is the brainchild of Austin-based artist Mike Stewart (also known as Mikey2Hats). With over 100 million streams on Spotify as a producer, Stewart has built quite a reputation for his unpredictable collaborations and genre-blending approach. For this new venture, he’s teamed up with Marcus Praed on the Moog synth and Julio Figueroa on drums.

“Light travels millions of miles just to find us dancing in our living rooms.”
“It Reaches Us” is a song that came together after Stewart spent time thinking about the two major solar eclipses that happened in 2024. There’s something about watching those events that gets you thinking about light, space, and time, and that’s exactly where this track lives. The track itself is a solid mix of psychedelic and electronic pop with a strong 80s groove running through it. The lyrics talk about how light from stars takes so long to reach Earth that if a star stopped shining, it would have happened ages ago, before we’d even notice. It’s the kind of thought that can make your brain hurt if you think about it too long, but Stewart presents it in a way that feels more wonder than worry.
As an introduction to what’s coming with the full album, “It Reaches Us” does a good job of showing off what Mike Stewart Theory is about. They’re clearly not interested in staying in one lane, and the international recording approach suggests they’re thinking big picture. “It Reaches Us” feels like the start of something promising from Mike Stewart Theory, cosmic themes with feet firmly planted on the dance floor.
