Jayem (vocalist/multi-instrumentalist) and Ricky 100 (bassist/guitarist) form the indie pop duo Wotts in Ottawa, Canada. Wotts has performed at Junofest, Canadian Music Week, and RBC Bluesfest, and they’ve had praise from media like CBC Radio in Canada, EARMILK in the United States and Canada, The Luna Collective in the United States, and Mystic Sons in the United Kingdom.

“WANNABE” serves as the group’s second single off their forthcoming EP PETALS. Jayem is the one behind its production. While still retaining their distinctive indie pop sound, the song ventures into more electronic and even dance-influenced terrain. The three-song EP depicts a tale of unrequited love, says Wotts. In the track Wotts blends his signature indie sound with dance and electronic music, drawing influence from artists like Dayglow and Tame Impala. Thus, the band’s “a happy sad song” is the end product. With its icy lyrics, “WANNABE” aims into bop territory with its arsenal of vintage drum machines, warm analogue synthesisers, and razor-sharp guitars. Concerning the style of the song, Wotts returned to their origins and reignited their passion for Australian psych pop. Over the course of the song, we hear a fascinating contrast between happy and sad feelings, conveyed via various parts of the soundscape, creating a sense of tension and intrigue. In the end, the catchy melody gives it an approachable edge that goes beyond the icy words and gives it a lively shine all through.
