Jessi Robertson Confronts the Monster Within on “Shadow War: Singularity”

Jessi Robertson has never been one to shy away from the heavy stuff. The Nashville-based artist’s music lives somewhere between indie folk and art rock, carried by vocals that know exactly when to whisper and when to roar.

“We build monsters in our minds, then wonder why we can’t recognize our own reflection.”

Her latest release, “Shadow War: Singularity,” comes from the Dark Matter Singularity Series, where Robertson teams up with other artists to reimagine tracks from her 2025 album “Dark Matter.” This time, she’s joined forces with Aaron Berg from Mountainwalker, and together they’ve created something that stands out. The song tackles a question we don’t ask ourselves enough: what happens when the person you’re fighting against is actually you?

Drawing inspiration from Golem mythology and Frankenstein, Robertson explores how we turn ourselves and others into creatures when fear takes over. She walks you through the experience of feeling like a stranger in your own skin, of fighting battles that exist entirely in your head, of seeing yourself as both the soldier and the enemy. “Shadow War: Singularity” continues that exploration but zooms in on something universal: we all know what it’s like to feel like the creature nobody knows, to fight ourselves while trying to survive.

In a world that’s good at making us see each other as threats, “Shadow War: Singularity” asks us to pause and remember the human underneath. Starting with ourselves.
