Kenjah David Returns to France with “Libère Les Maux” and a World of Influence

This globe-trotting singer-songwriter, Kenjah David, has spent years collecting musical influences the way some people collect stamps, except his collection includes seggae from Mauritius, mantras from the Ganges, and everything in between.

“Music becomes the four walls when the world outside shakes.”

“Libère Les Maux” is the first taste of what David’s cooking up with producer Fred Martin at Studios Ferber in Paris, and it’s worth your time. The song title is a clever bit of wordplay: “free the pains” and “free the words” in French, which pretty much sums up what the track delivers. This is comfort music for uncomfortable times, built around the idea that sometimes the best thing you can do when the world gets heavy is to sing it out. David’s addressing his kids here, using music as a kind of shelter, but the message feels universal enough that you don’t need to be a parent to get it.

The production strikes a nice balance between French chanson warmth and world music grooves, with Afrobeat rhythms and Latin pop flavors keeping things from getting too precious. If “Libère Les Maux” is any indication of where David’s upcoming album is headed, we’re in for something genuinely unpretentious.
