But even while climbing that ladder, he kept coming back to what he’d loved since he was a teenager: writing poetry and songs. That’s where his real voice lives, and after decades of balancing both worlds, he’s now fully leaning into the music side of things.

Here’s what makes his new album release different: Barlow didn’t pick these songs himself. He handed that job over to his fans, friends, and family, the people who’ve been listening from the start and know his catalog inside out. The result is an 18-track collection that pulls from his previous work, mixing the bluesy, R&B-flavored tracks from Emotional Journey with the heavier material from The Bill Barlow Project. It’s essentially a fan-curated playlist, but Barlow went ahead and arranged everything with purpose, creating what he calls “a unique journey of emotions.”
What you get with “By Special Request” is variety. The styles shift, but his approach stays consistent. He’s always writing from inside the experience, not as someone looking in from the outside. “I observe situations and write from within them,” he says. He’s aiming for something more direct: making you think about your own life, your own messy, complicated moments.
Barlow calls himself “an entertaining emotional storyteller,” and that’s pretty accurate. The fact that this is his third album says he’s in it for the long haul.
