Energy Whores is the kind of band that makes you stop scrolling. Led by Carrie Schoenfeld, a classically-trained pianist turned rebel with a cause, alongside guitarist Attilio Valenti, this New York City duo isn’t interested in playing it safe. Working out of a DIY basement studio, Schoenfeld brings her background in Off-Broadway production and indie filmmaking to create what she calls “avant electro” music that hits you in the chest and the brain at the same time.

“The brightest lights often cast the darkest shadows.”
“Pretty Sparkly Things” is exactly what you’d expect from a band that calls itself Energy Whores. The synths pulse, the beats hit hard, and Schoenfeld’s vocals draw you in with an almost hypnotic quality. Schoenfeld tackles wealth inequality and our obsession with luxury culture, but she delivers it with bite and brains rather than sounding pretentious or preachy. She’s calling out the absurdity of a world where people worship designer goods they’ll never afford while struggling to even pay for basic necessities.
This is dance music with a conscience. Schoenfeld calls herself a “lyrical arsonist,” and songs like this prove she’s not just throwing around cool phrases, but rather actually lighting the fires. Energy Whores speak to anyone who’s ever felt frustrated by the gap between the haves and have-nots, anyone who’s tired of being told that material possessions define worth.
If you’re ready for electronic music that actually has something to say, Energy Whores needs to be on your radar. Check out “Pretty Sparkly Things” and prepare to have your expectations challenged.
