Cupid Spell’s “Look Alike” Brings Lynch-Inspired Dark Pop to Life

Cupid Spell is the newest project from Bloomington, Indiana, pairing Josh Kreuzman (known in darkwave circles as Twice Dark) with Mandy Buffington. The duo came together earlier this year and bonded over their fascination with love, loss, and mystery through their music. What started as a collaboration for a specific project has grown into something with real potential. They’ve already mapped out plans for multiple singles through 2025 and 2026.

“Where identity blurs and reality bends, the question isn’t who you are, but who you think you are.”

Their debut track, “Look Alike”, was crafted specifically for Lover’s Eye Press’s 10th issue, a tribute to filmmaker David Lynch. Rather than just name-dropping the influence, Cupid Spell actually incorporates samples of Lynch himself from his Number of the Day series, bringing his voice together throughout the track.

The song tackles themes of duality, duplicity, and the idea that we all have multiple sides to our personalities. The production shows traces of Angelo Badalamenti and Julee Cruise’s work on Twin Peaks. Musically, the electronic and synth pop influences of “Look Alike” keep everything modern and radio-friendly. The track poses that uncomfortable question we’ve all faced: are you really being yourself, or just playing a version of who you think you should be?

For a debut single, “Look Alike” demonstrates serious potential. The songwriting is thoughtful, the production is professional, and the concept is brought to life successfully. More importantly, it leaves you curious about what Cupid Spell might do next.

Give it a listen and see if you recognise yourself in the mirror they’re holding up.
