“Cowards and Shadows” is Fiona Amaka’s Take on Modern Social Withdrawal

Fiona Amaka is gaining recognition in the indie rock scene with her distinct perspective in songwriting. Based in London and working with producer Andy Zanini, she’s been getting some well-deserved attention on social media, with fans noting similarities to David Bowie’s style, a comparison she’s happy to embrace. Her art-house influenced rock sound feels unique without trying too hard to be different.

“What disappears without explanation teaches us the most about that presence.”

“Cowards and Shadows” is Amaka’s second track of this year, and it tackles something we’ve collectively experienced: being ghosted. The song came together after Amaka noticed how this behavior had spread beyond dating into job hunting and everyday interactions. She developed it by playing early versions at open mic nights, watching people immediately relate to what she was saying. Rather than wallowing in the frustration of unanswered texts or disappeared contacts, Amaka focuses on what comes next.

Ghosting isn’t just a dating problem anymore, but it’s become a way people handle all kinds of uncomfortable situations, from job interviews to friendships. Amaka addresses this issue without being preachy or bitter. In a world where everyone seems to normalize an unhealthy social life, “Cowards and Shadows” is an indie rock song with purpose.
