Varun Sheel is an artist whose story feels as genuine as his songs. Growing up with a father who was a trained Hindustani classical vocalist, Varun Sheel learned about breath control and vocal nuance before he could probably tie his shoes. But he didn’t stop there. He picked up a guitar on his own, fell hard for players like Paul Gilbert and Buckethead, and somehow managed to blend all these inspirations.

“cool like you” understands that awful feeling when your partner talks about how amazing some other person is, and you realize you’ve been working so hard to be “cool” that you’ve completely lost track of who you actually are. The way he captures that specific brand of relationship anxiety, where you’re simultaneously in love and completely terrified of not seeming “cool enough”, hits different. Varun wraps these vulnerable confessions in production of disco-influenced guitars that sparkle with optimism, while the bouncy 808s and crisp drums create this irresistible groove, even as the lyrics are breaking your heart a little.

“cool like you” reminds you why you fell in love with the indie pop genre in the first place. It’s smart enough to make you think, catchy enough to get stuck in your head, and relatable enough to break your heart just a little.
