We were lucky enough to get a chance to have a heart-to-heart conversation with Ava, here is an excerpt from that conversation:

Question 1.
“Laugh Track” beautifully uses sitcoms for self-reflection is a very refreshing concept, what inspired you to look at your situation through this unique lens?

Thanks so much! I wrote this song as I was dealing with a lot of insecurity about myself, my personality, my likability, and most importantly, my humor. I decided to write about it, but I put it through the lens of sitcoms because they happen to be my favorite type of show! I love them so much and wanted to include them because I was rewatching my favorite show, How I Met Your Mother, while I was writing!

Question 2.
You mentioned deep characters like Ted Mosby, how do you resonate with these characters?

I’d say that Ted Mosby is really fascinating to me, because he’s one of the most hated characters ever, but on my eighth watch of the show now (I know, I know) I’d say that he’s really sad more than anything. And I have a fear of being like him in many ways, but I also really do resonate with him and his slightly frustrating tendencies sometimes, so he’s the first character I thought of when I was writing! Josh Radner really did a great job bringing that character to life, and I knew that I needed a reference in ‘Laugh Track’!

Question 3.
Hearing this song, it feels like your relationship with humor has been a very interesting one, tell us more about it. How has it shaped you as a person?

Yeah, I’d love to talk about that! I’ve always struggled with humor, and trying to navigate conversations with people I think are funnier than me. It gives me quite a lot of stress to even joke around casually, because I’m stuck in my own head trying to figure out how I’m perceived. As I’ve gotten older, it’s gotten harder to give myself a break in that regard, and with sitcoms as my favorite shows, it’s almost ironic that I have a hard time with humor. That idea led me to writing this song, and in the end I’m grateful for the stress because it created ‘Laugh Track’!

Question 4.
In order to write something like “Laugh Track”, you need to be willingly vulnerable, was it a scary experience putting your insecurities for the world to see?

Definitely, it was a scary thing to share all this with the world. Releasing songs is always a deeply personal process so when everyone hears it, you put yourself on display a bit. With this one, however, it was different. It was more vulnerable than I’ve ever been in my music, and I didn’t really know how people would respond. Luckily, I was met with such a kind reaction from everyone, and it means the world to me!

Question 5.
You said you do not want to be the person you are anymore, did making this song put you on that direction already?

For sure. Making this song was so important in my journey towards self-confidence, and with every song I release into the world, I find my voice more and more. I love this song so much, and making a joke out my insecurity really did help me laugh it all off! I feel more comfortable with things like humor than ever before, and I hope that it can do the same for some of my listeners!
