Asylum 213 came to life as a result of a spark of inspiration that hit Dylan Lawson in the summer of 2010. The musical vision (dream) that Lawson saw required a full fledged band that could carry the sound and produce a decent sonic output. It became a 4-person band by 2019 and the 4 musicians explored the world of rock and found their space in alternative-rock. The current line-up of the band is as follows- Dexy Collier (bass), Marvin Ward (keytard/vox), Benjamin Pilch (drums), and Dylan Lawson (guitar/vox). This band is known for their mind-blowing live sets that send a wave of pure energy combined with intricate musicality. They have formed a connection with the audience through their art and that shows in their sold out gigs. The band likes to attribute its inspiration from genres like sludge rock, shoegaze, alternative, math rock, pop, trip-hop, and metal. Crafting a sound that incorporates elements and styles from so many varied genres is a skill in itself. Recently, the band has started releasing songs on a regular basis after a big gap in their discography from 2021 to 2024. I am excited to see what the band has cooked up in their dormant state and what all inspirations do reflect in their first album since 2021.

“Asylum 213 surely did not dissapoint. Their album maps a fun journey with facinating perspectives and some ugly turns that keeps the listeners on their toes.”
Malpractitioner is a metaphoric journey that could relate to any individual on a personal level. The journey is through the hopelessness that one is faced with in life and the various coping mechanisms that we device for ourselves (both good and bad) to get through it. Each song gives you a fresh perspective that ironically might have crossed your mind at the time of distress. The alt-rock sound of the album is carried pretty well throughout. In the pursuit of recovery and healing, we find ourselves lost in the world of thought and this album serves as an anchor point for us to embrace feeling lost sometimes.
One of my personal favorite songs from the album is ‘Subi’. The song has some creative switches between loud/ high-energy growling sections and instrument heavy sections that keep the balance. The singer went all out on this track and the passionate growls hold the capacity to shake bones. You should experience the 10 song album to find out the ugliness and the beauty of the human mind from the band’s perspective.
