Deaf Joey is a very creative hip-hop musician from Oregon City, United States. His persona as an artist keeps evolving and with each release, it is exciting to see what Deaf has got for us this time. He draws inspiration from the greats of the genre like Kanye West and Tyler, The Creator. His songs are mostly dark and the music style keeps differing. Deaf showcases his versatility through his discography. He comes up with an in-your-face attitude in his tracks. He openly mentions his insecurities and shortcomings which is very empowering not only for the artist but for the listeners as well. One of his tracks (which is my favorite) ‘Aw Man’ dives into introspection and the sense of responsibility that he feels to create good music.
“Strobe showcases a sound that we miss in the hip-hop scene today.”
Strobe is a six-song hip-hop EP that defines Deaf Joey’s character and skills as an artist and showers us with some really good music. The EP starts with Deaf talking about himself and his recent life experiences. The song Deafworld dives deep into his mindset at this point. The profound beat switch in the track will make you go crazy. The EP proceeds onto the next song called ‘Plottin’. The track has a peculiar mysterious and dark vibe. Deaf starts rapping in a very catchy and bumpy flow which will have your head bopping to his groove. The track talks about Deaf’s annoyance with the toxic people around him.
As we move forward, we get to see the more flow-oriented and soul-stirring music. The song Cravee revolves around being unaffected by the people who try to finesse and Joey being locked in with his music. The melodic section in the track sounds very unique. It has a dreamy and dark vibe to it. The next track Cubicle++Boltter starts with an impactful interlude. The synth sounds and slow drums create a profound listening experience. The hook and the melodies used in the track are pretty catchy and the lines are quotable. The next one is called ‘Fortuneteller*’ and is on a Jersey club beat. Joey goes hard with the flow on this one. It is a track that you can play at parties and in your car too.
The EP concludes with a new-wave melodic track that is a more emotion-filled and vibey one. Overall, the tracklist of the EP is amazing and Deaf is sure to give you a unique listening experience. With heavy experimentation and exploration of deep topics, the EP is a must-listen for all hip-hop heads.
