Muse Chronicle

Stray Owls is a Mebane based rock band which is creating some out of the box tracks that will bend your mind. The band is not scared to push the boundaries and experiment with sounds and rhythms. The bits of rawness and imperfections in their tracks make their sound very authentic and unique at the same time. Their songs evoke thoughts and emotions in the listener’s minds. The band plays in many different feels and their discography has everything under one roof. The instrumental parts are crafted so well and blend perfectly with the lyrics to create an atmosphere that let you enjoy the music to the fullest. The USPs of the band in my opinion are two- firstly, experimentation and secondly, smooth and seamless arrangements. They keep their mixes a bit raw, this gives a very vintage feel to their songs. I was totally surprised to see the versatility of the band in terms of music style and themes.

The album ‘When the Going Gets Weird’ is like a new musical endeavor for the band as well. They have used some instruments (like dumbek, mandolin, piano and the ukulele) that they usually do not and it turned out pretty well for the sonics of the album. This album took almost 3 years to be released to the world as the band started working on it during COVID where they could not sit together, jam and create songs, but, had to send over instrumental and thematic designs to each other for the ideation and creation of the album. Since that time, many other songs surfaced while simultaneously, the album was being created. Finally, in 2024, the album is out for us to listen.

One of my favorite tracks from the album is Daylight. The song has a very smooth and chilled out vibe. The vocals are very soft and it feels like a dream. The instrumentals are slow and groovy. The song has an intense instrumental section where the band pushes the boundaries with the textures of the guitars and melody choices. The contrasting sections in the song will blow your mind. The way that the band switches between high and low energy is phenomenal.
