Martin Hallmark leads as composer to this album which goes beyond traditional jazz and that’s not it he also blends in a variety of global influences. Refusing to stick to the usual boundaries, Cambridge-based jazz quartet Q3, releases their latest, “Water Speckled Midnight,” which shows their adventurous spirit. Individual members of the team are masters of their own craft, from Tiago Coimbra’s versatile electric bass lines to Kevin Flanagan’s soaring tenor saxophone. Drummer Oscar Reynolds provides a delicate foundation that lets the music’s fluidity and vibrant energy shine. Beginning with “Through the Clouds,” it just captures their spirit of adventure with dynamic shifts and soaring melodies which sets the stage for a whole new and exciting journey. The next song, “Odyssey,” keeps exploring new sounds with a bit of mystery. Then, “Emerald Eyes” slows things down for a sweet and romantic moment, showing how well this band can switch things up. “Nomads” takes us on a trip around the world with music that mixes Arabic and North African styles with the band’s jazzy sound, creating something completely new. “Nocturne” offers a tranquil soundscape, a calming break before the title track, while “Water Speckled Midnight,” paints a peaceful, starlit night with gentle piano and a contemplative mood. The playful “Rondo di Girulata” adds a burst of energy, contrasting sharply with the previous track.
