Martin Callingham is a folk artist who focuses on the emotions that a track conveys rather than the clarity or the quality. I myself believe that the vibe and the theme of any song is more important than the technicalities as that is what connects with the listeners. He chooses deep introspective themes that dive deep into the listener’s minds, forcing them to think and to feel. The artist’s love for guitar is evident by the use of that instrument in all his songs. He plays the guitar himself and is a fine instrumentalist. This breaks the bounds for the artist to express through his music as he can use his incredible vocals along with the intricate instrumental work to strengthen the vibrational force of his tracks.

“Patterns is an album for your inner child. With deep poetry, intricate instrumentalism and vulnerable themes, the album has it all.”
The album is a pure work of art that defines many emotions sonically. The artist touches the topics like nostalgia, introspection, and suppressed desires. The sound of the whole album seems very raw and that is what adds texture to your listening experience and makes the project relatable for the listeners.
Let’s look at some of the tracks from the album and dissect what stood out for me. The track ‘A Toe On The Water’ is a very poetic take of the artist on human life experiences. The soft drums and the rhythmic guitars will make your body swing and calm your nerves down. The artist uses personification in the lyrics to depict certain emotions and concepts.
Another track that I very much liked is ‘Treehouse’. The name of the track is self-explanatory, Martin talks about a treehouse. However, it is not a regular treehouse but the one that he has some childhood memories attached with. He describes how it used to feel being in the treehouse and how it feels now to look back at those times. The treehouse is a representation of the childhood days of the artist. The reminiscing lyrics that say- ‘life pleaded to live, we answered at last…’ is sad yet a very calming take on the memories that the artist is missing at this point in his life. This track has a animated video created for it by the visual artist Martyna Sikonczyk. He did an amazing job in depicting what martin was trying to convey.
The whole album is a beautiful piece of art that anyone can enjoy. With a very intense vibe yet a very calming energy, the album is one of its kind.
