A Listen Through Mufasa RKG’s “Cocoa Butta 3”, a Hip-Hop Album Full of Diverse Influences

Rookie Kid Genius, or Mufasa RKG, is a musician from Springfield, Massachusetts, who plays progressive hip hop punk. His most recent album, “Cocoa Butta 3,” has extensive concept exploration and an unique hip-hop sound.

“With different flows and the many styles of rap covered, “Cocoa Butta 3” is lyrically strong. “

As the album’s first track, “Coast Rolla” is an instrumental that successfully establishes the record’s mood and style via its exploration of unconventional production methods. The second song opens with some recognisable comic book noises before settling into a trap-influenced hip-hop style, complete with freestyle lines that don’t seem to follow any particular pattern.  We settle into a very 1990s, turn-of-the-century hip-hop style on the third track, “Art Trap,” thanks to some slick sample work in the background that, once again, provides an excellent foundation for the rapping up top. Again, the fun-sounding synthesisers on track four, “Fish N Chips,” complement the rapping and the rest of the music quite well. Of the 12 tracks on this album, a couple of specific notes include “PURPLE PLUMS AND SWEET CORN”, a more poetically and steadily concentrated track that keeps the spark as it develops the theme set, and “MARKERS AND MICS“, a much more intense escape from the general mood of the album.

Overall, “Cocoa Butta 3” by Mufasa RKG is a fantastic hip-hop album full of innovative sounds and techniques that test the limits of looping and sampling in numerous places. Catch the muse down here.
