Firebird Union, comprised of brothers Ross and Matt Churchill, is a transatlantic electronic indie band that has been a real labor of love for the duo for decades. Matt and Ross Churchill have had success as professionals in their own right, garnering praise from critics and fans alike in print, online, and on the air. The brothers have been making music together for their whole lives, even though they won’t release their first song, “Higher Ground,” until 2023.

“Chaotic at first, Higher Ground has a mellifluous underside.“
Firebird Union’s first song, “Higher Ground,” is a captivating piece of work. “We modernize the classic guitar sound, taking inspiration from our heroes while pushing the sonic limits of what the modern tool allows us to achieve,” they say, describing the endeavor as an embrace of “the resurgence of 90s culture.” ‘Higher Ground’ is the result of sticking one’s head into a sonic maelstrom, opening one’s eyes, and feeling the kaleidoscopic goo adhere to one’s face. The synthesized drum rhythms and groovy bass give the song a disco-inspired sexuality.
A funk bass line and a persistent rhythmic pulse drive the beginning. Vocals at first fit nicely with a nighttime, laid-back background, but this soon gives way to a more upbeat, charismatic performance. Exciting guitar swells and anthemic, multi-tracked vocals give the chorus. Overall, “Higher Ground” is a strong performance by Firebird Union, with parts that are both fondly nostalgic and newly innovative. Hit the Spotify link below to enjoy the track.
