We got the opportunity to dive into the mind of Cas Du Pree and learn more about his journey and get his insights on music and other things.
1. Your journey in music has been quite diverse, from participating in children’s song contests to singing at karaoke bars. How did these early experiences shape your passion for music?
To be honest, all the song contest only made me insecure which is why I “quit” music quite a lot. I never felt good enough to do this. That’s why it took me so many years before actively pursuing a career in music! I did however meet great people that I’ve learned a lot from. So I am not bitter and it also resulted in my first single as well. So thank you, next!
2. How do you approach collaborations with other musicians? Is there anyone you dream of working with in the future?
I usually send them a DM on social media or an email telling them why I think we would be a great fit. We all have different ways of working and that’s what makes it difficult. I noticed in my last few tries that they want a finished demo without doing any work besides recording. That’s not really how I see a collaboration. For me it’s a journey you take on together from start to finish. Exploring ideas, writing sessions together. If I have to pick one or 2 artists to work with I would definitely say Sam Smith and Sia! I love their unique but recognisable style.
3. Could you guide us through your approach to crafting a fresh musical composition? How do you generate initial concepts, and what methods do you use to shape and polish these ideas into a finalised musical piece?
My music has so many different starting points… Sometimes I have a melody in my head and I just listen to how it makes me feel. Then I tap into memories that fit that emotion, to start writing textual sketches. Sometimes I start the other way around and start with a lyrical concept before starting a melody. In the end I always want to work towards a total concept that can be told via a videoclip or artwork. In any case my friend and long time producer Arron Storey is there to fill in gaps and explore my (sometimes) wild ideas!
4. What do you enjoy doing outside of music? How do these activities impact your creativity?
In my spare time I love to play video games On my PS5 or desktop. I love games like Guildwars 2 or Tomb Raider. They make you think outside the box and challenge your creativity with solutions! Also a bit of photo or video editing. I am self-taught and learn something new every single time. I do create 99% of my own concepts and artwork, and direct my own videoclips as well.
5. How do you stay motivated and inspired to continue growing as a musician?
I want to be better every new release. Grow as I go. Of course I attract new people that want to work with me, or I find new people that fit my new ideas. So my team is constantly changing like my music, and everyone is quite different. They challenge me in ways I could not have imagined.
