Meet Matt Deangelis, whose music has been turning heads. In our interview, he shares his insights into the creative process, the industry’s challenges, and his artistic vision.
1) Can you walk us through your process for creating a new piece of music? How do you come up with ideas, and how do you refine them into a finished product?
My songwriting comes in many stages, but often begins with just a thought or an idea that I put into either lyrical or musical form. While I used to compose the lyrics to my songs first more times than not, I have evolved to compose musical ideas in the beginning of my writing process, as well. I sometimes find myself writing a song in a matter of minutes or an hour, while other times a more detailed composition may take up to a week or more. I frequently have thoughts and ideas for songs in my head everywhere I go, often using the world around me for inspiration. Once I complete a song, it goes into the studio where I lay the basic track down and add a variety of parts on top of my original song to make it complete. The finished product is still the song I wrote, but through a process of listening back and revising what has been recorded, the song becomes complete.
2) Many musicians express themselves through music videos. How involved are you in the creative process of your music videos, and what message do you aim to convey through visual storytelling?
I have begun to release music videos for each of my new singles over the past year and often brainstorm ideas with my group of producers in the studio and my film producer for the music videos that are created. A rough outline or sequence of events for the video is typically created in the beginning of the process, then modified and revised as we are filming to the song itself. The main goal in creating these music videos is to tell a detailed story about the song in which we are filming along to, and include a performance. We always aim to create a positive and uplifting message throughout the video and are just beginning to uncover further music video production that will be used in upcoming projects.
3) Tell us about a time when you faced a difficult musical challenge. How did you approach the situation, and what did you learn from it?
I have faced many difficult musical challenges thus far in my career. One time in particular that changed my mindset and goal as a professional was when I was about 17 and I went to audition for the popular television show and singing competition “The Voice” in Philadelphia, near where I am located. I came into the audition thinking that I was sure to pass through to the next round and be featured on the show. However, I was rejected and was not asked to continue further from the audition. This experience made me realize how many stages there are in the music and entertainment industry that you must persevere through in order to become successful. While this is just one experience, it taught me patience and increased my level of determination in becoming a true professional in the business.
4) What do you enjoy doing outside of music? How do these activities impact your creativity?
Outside of my music career, I have a love for meteorology and have been a storm chaser more seriously for several years now. I filmed a significant tornado near my home town in New Jersey just two years ago and was featured on many news networks throughout the world, including a popular television show on the Weather Channel entitled “Deadline to Disaster.” My footage was featured in the program and I was interviewed on my experience during this storm chase. I am also taking my weather and nature photography more seriously and have begun to develop a professional portfolio. Being a storm chaser aids in my creativity as a songwriter and has been built into my brand over the recent years, as I am an advocate for climate change. A goal for my music videos is to incorporate my storm chasing footage in order to further tell a story based on my songs I have composed.
5) Music often reflects and responds to societal issues. Do you see your music as a form of social commentary, and if so, how do you approach incorporating relevant themes into your work?
My music is most certainly a form of social commentary. One of the main topics and themes in my songwriting has become worldly events and issues that must be addressed, such as social unrest, climate change, and mental health . I frequently express the need for change in the world in many of my songs. As an advocate for climate change and world peace, my songs tell stories of how we as a community must do our part to promote the well being of our planet and society. While my songs often address these major issues, I almost always include a positive message that is a result of my faith in God. My faith continues to grow as it has been a source of strength in dealing with OCD and anxiety that I have dealt with from my youth. My goal as a songwriter is to inspire all people and promote change for the better in our world.
